What about that Asigmatism?
So I was talking to my BFF the other day and she was telling me about having to go back to wearing her glasses full time due having an astigmatism. Of course most of us have heard about this vision problem before but being that ophthalmology is not my field of expertise I decided to put my healthcare hat on and do a little research because sharing is caring and I’m a good friend.
In order to rock that 20/20 vision status our corneas and lens’ have to be equally shaped to refract light to the retina and in the case of an Astigmatism there is mismatched curvature of your eye lens causing blurry, distorted vision with additional afflictions such as headaches and trouble seeing at night according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Eye glasses and contacts can help in adapting but depending on the level and type of your astigmatism contacts may no longer be an option which may lead you to possible surgical treatments. Eye glasses and/or contacts may be the only options early on, but like anything related to our bodies, hair color, skin texture and level of patience-our vision changes, and if you're already starting off with astigmatism it can get progressively worse. And because I know you're a responsible adult you will consult your physician to see what all your options are.
I won’t stand here and lie to you and say I know exactly what it’s like to grow up with poor eyesight because I wore glasses for years temporarily. What I mean by that is I somehow was able to go from 20/40 to 20/20 vision within a few years time-don’t ask me how because I will just blame it on sunbursts and vitamin deficiency because I really don’t know. That’s why it’s important get your annual check ups but we will talk about that another day. Anyway wearing glasses are a good start and let's face it glasses aren't as generic and dorky looking as they used to be (BTW, I like dorks-hey!): the shapes, the sizes, THE COLORS and the lack of color which is so dope it’s next level, there's no limit to the level flyness you can achieve. You can even save yourself the hassle of going to an eyeglass counter and take your script on line and do your try ons at home. For instance, there’s Warby Parker and LensCrafters (online) if you don’t want to stand in store putting on an uncomfortable modeling session. It’s not easy posing in front of a public mirror pretending your someone else while trying to find the best extra set of eyes for yourself, I get it the struggle is real.
If this is your journey and if your anything like me, you like a good cat eye plus you will make sure your glasses aren’t a hinderance but an enhancement because this is 2022 and if its taught us anything its we don’t have time to embrace our insecurities. Right?
Simply put it just sucks getting older, but I will put my Marvel stan fedora on (because I don’t just do “hats”) and say just like Thanos getting older “is inevitable” but if were lucky we can do it with grace while remaining somewhat healthy, so we might as well make the most out of it and stunt while doing it.
So what are your thoughts, are you with me?
